Calumet teen jailed in car theft

HANCOCK — A 19-year-old Calumet man was arrested after allegedly stealing a car from Hancock Wednesday.

The tan 2005 Chevy Impala was reported stolen from an address on west Quincy Street around 6:10 p.m. Wednesday, the Hancock Police Department said in a release. The keys to the car had been left inside.

While the caller had just noticed the car was missing before the car, security footage later showed the vehicle had been taken around 12:30 p.m.

Law enforcement issued a be-on-the-lookout notice through the area. About 8:30 p.m., a Michigan State Police trooper stopped the vehicle, which was traveling south on M-26 in Houghton.

After Hancock police took the driver into custody, he was lodged at the Houghton County Jail pending charges and arraignment. The suspect had not been arraigned as of Friday morning.

The vehicle was returned to the owner.
