No injuries in Portage Township Fire

PORTAGE TOWNSHIP — No injuries were reported in a structure fire at Northwoods Cabins on U.S. 41, about four miles south of Houghton Friday morning.
The Houghton County Sheriff’s Office responded to the fire call at approximately 5:30 a.m. Friday morning, according to a deputy on the scene and a later release from that office.
According to the release, when personnel arrived at the scene the north side of the structure was fully engulfed.
No people were located inside, but a cat was rescued from one of the apartments. All occupants of the apartment building were identified as students at Michigan Technological University who are on spring break at this time.
The release states that Michigan Tech is currently setting up housing options for the students when they return.
The fire is not believed to be suspicious in nature at this time and is believed to have started in the mechanical room.
A section of U.S. 41 between Denton and Massie roads was closed to all traffic except for semis, while firefighters were on scene.
Assisting at the scene were Houghton City Police Department, Michigan Tech Police, Hurontown Fire Department, Chassell Fire Department, Adams Township Fire Department and Mercy Ambulance.
