KORC to host cleanup across the Keweenaw

KEWEENAW COUNTY — The Keweenaw Outdoor Recreation Coalition is conducting its Keweenaw Clean-Up on Saturday, May 18, from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Individuals, groups and organizations are invited to the event.

The focus will be on the trails and roads around the Keweenaw. The starting point will be at the park in the center of Copper Harbor, where KORC will have a tent set up.

However, there will also be several other starting locations including: Brunette Roadside Park, on Gay-Lac La Belle Road; the Bete Grise Preserve; the Bete Grise North Beach Roadside Park; Seneca Mine #3, just north of Mohawk; and Phoenix Farm Road.

Gina Nicholas, KORC president, said the focus is going to be on public roadsides, public parks, beaches, trails — “Wherever you want to clean.” The Keweenaw Snowmobile Club will be starting from the Mohawk Groomer Barn. The Keweenaw Sportsman’s Club is going to be doing Thayer Lake and the trails and the beach there.

People starting at one of these other locations, please keep a look out for a KORC sign or banner where other organizers and volunteers can get volunteers started or point them in the right direction.

Nicholas said KORC will have a special capacity to take big metals, including old culverts, even old, abandoned cars that may be found in the cleanup areas.

“But you can pick up cans and cigarette butts and stuff, too,” said Nicholas.

“Please bring your collected trash to Copper Harbor or use the trailers at those sites if they are located there,” a KORC release says. “We will be doing a big group photo of our successful clean-up in Copper Harbor.”

After the cleanup, there will be a cook-out in the Community Park, in Copper Harbor. Several organizations and businesses have donated door prizes to give away to volunteers as well, and names will be drawn at the cookout for those.
