Hopscotch in Hancock

Hancock artist Rebecca Paavo puts the finishing touches on a hopscotch piece on the sidewalk in front of Quincy Green Thursday night. The theme, Summertime Hopping into Autumn, will be complemented by a piece on the other side of Quincy Green depicting Winter Hopping into Spring. Paavo had put in about 20 hours on the design, which will need to be roped off for another 72 hours before kids can jump on it.
The Quincy Green design follows another piece she completed in front of K.C. Bonker’s during Bridgefest weekend. The idea originated with K.C. Bonker’s owner Clay Hilman, who came to Paavo to suggest a hopscotch piece in front of his café. Hancock Community Development Manager Todd Gast, who loved the idea and helped obtain city funding for the project. That grew it from a simpler one to the permanent-scale interactive art pieces going in now.
The piece outside K.C. Bonker’s is seeing daily use, with some families staying for close to an hour, Paavo said.
“Kids are excited, adults are excited,” she said. “Actually, the elderly community is always the most positive about it. They haven’t seen hopscotch in ages, so it brings back that nostalgia.”
Paavo will paint another set of hopscotch squares on Quincy Green between the Magic Kiln and Sew Cranky.
