Murder trial moved to January
HOUGHTON — The trial of a Wisconsin mother and son accused of murdering a Hancock Township relative at his home last year has been postponed.
Margaret Kempainen, 51, and Jacob Kempainen, 21, had originally been scheduled for the October trial docket. Last week, that was moved to January.
They were both arrested last year on charges of killing Alvin Kempainen, Jacob’s grandfather and Margaret’s father-in-law, at his home.
Margaret and Jacob are both charged with homicide – open murder and conspiracy to commit open murder. Jacob Kempainen, whom his mother identified as the shooter, has an additional felony firearms charge. If found guilty, they could each be sentenced to life in prison.
Both Kempainens underwent forensic evaluations earlier this year and were declared competent to stand trial.
Jacob Kempainen has a motion hearing scheduled for Oct. 7 on multiple motions, including one to suppress evidence from his interrogation he alleged was collected in violation of his Miranda rights.
Their last day to enter pleas in their cases is Dec. 5.
