Miles for Music happening today

Michigan Tech’s chapter of the Mu Beta Psi National Honorary Musical Fraternity will be hosting their Miles for Music fundraiser today, beginning at 9 a.m.

Miles for Music is a run/walk charity event to raise money for the Dollar Bay High School music program. This year, Mu Beta Psi at Michigan Tech is running the event from start to finish.

Check in begins at 9 a.m., and the race will start at 10 a.m. Day-of registration is available. Registration is $15 for students and children and $25 for adults. Participants will meet outside of the Memorial Union Building on Michigan Tech’s Campus.

Dollar Bay School’s marching band is composed of 7th-12th grade students, and music classes are offered every year.

“We are so grateful that Mu Beta Psi chose the Dollar Bay music program,” said Amy Johnson, Dollar Bay’s band director. ”

“As our program continues to grow, we plan to use the funds to fix some of our well loved instruments, as well as to update our music library. I’ve been at Dollar Bay for five years now, and it’s been so much fun to see the students grow musically in what they are able to present at concerts, pep bands, and parades. The music classroom is a safe place for students, allowing them to try new things and explore different cultures and types of music.”

The band’s next performance is their Halloween Concert, on Oct. 30 at 7 p.m. in the Dollar Bay auditorium. There will also be a Costume Parade and Costume Contest. The event is open to the public.

“Students are able to choose the instrument of their choice, and students display their skills during parades, athletic events, and concerts.” the school writes about their program. “Band is a great way for musically inclined students to continue to grow and develop as life-long learners.”

Mu Beta Psi is a music-based fraternity with chapters all over the country. Their purpose includes stimulating interest in music and musical organizations, advancing music to its “proper place” as an educational subject, and encouraging fellowship amongst musicians.

“The members of Mu Beta Psi are a diverse group with many interests–but with one thing in common: we share a love for music,” the group writes. “By not requiring [members] to be music majors, Mu Beta Psi provides a unique opportunity for many students with an active interest in music to work together both musically and socially.”

Mu Beta Psi’s Michigan Tech chapter is very involved on campus, and members regularly volunteer their time with the Pep Band, selling programs at football games, and other charity work in the Keweenaw.

Starting at $3.50/week.
