A rewarding opportunity
Volunteers needed for backpack distribution

HANCOCK -- The end of August is fast approaching. While students are prepping to go back to school, not everyone has the resources or funds to afford new school supplies. Copper Country Angel Mission is continuing to supply students in need through its Stuff the Bus program, but needs more volunteers for this and next weekend.
According to Angel Mission's website, volunteers are needed 1-4 p.m., this afternoon to pack up the backpacks for Friday and Saturday's distribution at The Salvation Army and at Angel Mission store in Calumet.
Angel Mission Board Member Lisa Nelson said this is an opportunity for community members to come and do good. "We need people at The Salvation Army," she said. "We also need some help the following weekend at Angel Mission."
Nelson said partnering with The Salvation Army has immensely helped Angel Mission achieve its goals. "Around two years ago, The Salvation Army reached out to us, because they have a national campaign called Stuff the Bus, where they collect backpacks and distribute school supplies," she said. "We couldn't do this program at this size without The Salvation Army."
Tuesday morning, The Salvation Army's multipurpose room was jam packed with residents and volunteers from local businesses. Backpacks were set against the walls and school supplies were grouped up on tables in the middle of the room. One local business, Somero Enterprises in Atlantic Mine, sent several team members to help out Nelson and the Angel Mission.
Somero Global HR Director Hannah Mills said this volunteer opportunity is very popular among Somero employees who do service work. "I think it's very rewarding for our employees to be able to do this," she said. "The [opportunities] where it's benefitting children are definitely by far the most participated in."
Nelson said volunteers are needed for distribution Friday from 3:30 thru 7 p.m. and Saturday, 10 a.m. thru 1 p.m. at The Salvation Army in Hancock. Distribution at Calumet setup times this weekend is TBD. Next weekend's times are: August 28, 4-7 p.m. and August 29, 10 a.m. thru 1 p.m. at Angel Mission on Fifth Street in Calumet.
