OSCEOLA TOWNSHIP -- A man and a womnn from South Carolina died when the motorcycles they were driving were struck by an SUV Wednesday. According to a release from the Michigan State Police (MSP), troopers were dispatched at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday to US 41 near Golf Course Road in Oseola Township.
The MSP release stated that an SUV, driven by a 45-year-old woman was south bound on US 41 and was unaware that a pickup ahead of her had stopped to make a left-hand turn onto Golf Course Road. In order to avoid a collision, police said the driver of the SUV swerved into the northbound lane of US 41 where it collided with a pair of northbound motorcycles. The motorcyclists, a 65-year-old man and a 36 year-old woman, both from South Carolina, died at the scene, according to police
The driver of the SUV and two child passengers were evaluated at the scene by first responders and released.
MSP Seventh District Public Information Officer Ashley Miller said the incident remains under investigation and any information gathered by police will be directed to the Houghton County Prosecutor. "Everything will be sent to the Prosecutor's Office for review," Miller said. "That's standard protocol with anything like this.”
In addition to State Police, Mercy EMS, Calumet Township Fire and Rescue and deputies from the Houghton County Sheriff’s Office responded to the accident.
Both lanes of US 41 were closed as a result of the accident with traffic rerouted through nearby roads. Wednesday’s fatal accident was the second locally in less than a week. Last Friday evening a 72-year-man from Wisconsin died as the result of a motorcycle accident in Keweenaw County’s Grant Township.
