Fatal accident in Keweenaw County

Victim is 72 year-old motorcyclist

GRANT TOWNSHIP -- A man from Wisconsin died as the result of a motor cycle crash Friday in Keweenaw County’s Grant Township. The accident occurred on U.S. 41, one mile south of Washington Mine Road on.

The Keweenaw County Sheriff Office said deputies responded to a report of the crash at 7:40 p.m. Friday. According to a press release the preliminary investigation determined the driver, a 72 year-old man from Cumberland, Wisc. lost control of his vehicle, exited the roadway and crashed into a tree, which ejected him from the vehicle.

After sustaining critical injuries from the crash, the driver was transported by Mercy EMS to a local medical facility and then transported to UP Health Systyem-Marquette where he died as a result of injuries he sustained in the crash.

County Sheriff Curt Pennala said it is unclear what factors were involved in the crash. No futher information is available from the Sheriff's office. "It's something that obviously still remains under investigation," Pennala said. "We're trying to determine the cause of the crash. We have to go through all the evidence that was available to us and hopefully we can come to a conclusion in the near future."

The identity of the victim has not yet been released.

Copper Harbor Fire, Copper Harbor First Responders, Mercy EMS and Michigan State Police assisted at the scene on Friday.
