HANCOCK -- The Houghton County Fair celebrated its 75th year this past weekend with awards ceremonies and community celebration, entertainment and midway fun.
On Friday State Representative Gregory Markkanen (R-Hancock) announced the state of Michigan recognized Fair Board member of 59 years, Steve Palosaari, for his work throughout the years. "One of the perks of being State Representative is having the option of issuing special tributes to special people," Markkanen said. "On behalf of Senator McBroom and myself... we extend our sincere gratitude and best wishes to continue health, happiness and success in the years ahead."
The livestock shows included awarding showmanship and market prizes for steers, swine, sheep and goats -- along with smaller animals such as chickens and rabbits.
Houghton County Fair Swine Superintendent Casey Strom said youth participation is paramount to keeping the fair successful for the future. "If there's no interest in the youth, you're no longer going to have any farm-to-plate type of process," he said. "Keeping youth involved and interested in livestock is kind of the key for our future."
At the Youth Livestock Auction, several community members purchased the market winners and runners-up. Michigan Tech President Rick Koubek, purchased the Grand Champion Steer on behalf of MTU Dining Services.

Motocross shows, Monster Trucks, Midway rides and carnival games attracted many to the fairgrounds Friday and Saturday afternoons. One youngster, Aubrey K, said her favorite things were the rides and the monster trucks. "I like the Ferris Wheel," she said. "My favorite monster truck is the blue and white one with the teeth."
Even those without young kids still wanted to get in on the action. "If I were with younger kids I still would at age 57, I honestly would," fair-goer Stephanie Dixon said. "I'd probably be on the Zipper and everything, but it's low-key this time."
Another fair-goer with her family, Judy Hulkkonen, said she enjoyed all the fair had to offer after all these years. "I love the cotton candy and enjoy the Monster Truck show as well," she said.
Other fair activities included the front-of-house Dinosaur Takeover show for kids, a special canine show, petting zoo and plenty of other fun activities for families and residents.
