HOUGHTON -- A slew of new Huskies are making Michigan Technological University their new home, beginning Monday and continuing today. The start of the Fall Semester is right around the corner and students say they’re excited for their new independence and responsibilies.
Douglass-Houghton Hall (DHH) was one of the first stops on the new Husky move-in car route. Traffic was directed into the north lot and families were piling out of cars. Resident Advisors and Michigan Tech Football players were a part of the move-in team.
One new Husky, May Nurenberg from Lake Odessa, Mich., said she had been up to Tech a few times but was excited to move-in and start college. "I'm looking forward to the independence and freedom," the first-year ecological engineering major said. "I'm also looking forward to all my classes and getting into a proper major, instead of just basic gen eds."
The car line from DHH moved through Cliff Drive and on to U.S. 41, where they could be either directed to Wadsworth Hall or East McNair Hall. Wadsworth's south lot was filled with cars. New Huskies and their families continued the frenetic pace of the day.
One new Husky, Royal Oak, Mich. native Jack Nobel, said he was happy to see smiling faces and get help moving all of his stuff in. "I couldn't really ask for much more," the prospective aerospace engineering major said. "I'm excited to have my own space and be by myself."
Aside from traffic control volunteers and move-in helpers. Michigan Tech Residential Living staff were excited to help usher in the new Huskies. Executive Director of Residential Living Matthew Weekley helped workers and students outside of East McNair Hall. He said new student move-in was his department's Super Bowl. "When students and parents come in, the first thing they can expect are smiles and making sure the message is clear that everyone going to be okay."
Parents and their college-aged kids shared bittersweet moments outside residence halls and in dorms. Weekley said this is all a part of the process. "This is their home away from home," he said. "We want to make sure they feel at home and we're going to do everything we can to do that."
New Husky move-in ends today. First-year students can expect to participate in activities throughout this week in preparation for the start of the fall semester on Monday. A full schedule was published in last Saturday’s Daily Mining Gazette.
