Prosecutor waiting for accident report

HOUGHTON - The Houghton County Prosecutor's Office says it has heard nothing from the Michigan State Police regarding a vehicular crash in Osceola Township on Aug. 4 that left two South Carolina motorcyclists dead.
Dan Helmer, prosecuting attorney, said his office has not received or seen a report on the collision.
"They came in and they verbally talked with me very briefly about the basic facts," he said.
Helmer said he told the investigators to submit the report and if he had any questions he would contact them. They have not submitted it for his review.
According to MSP, an SUV driven by a 45-year-old woman was south bound on US 41 and was unaware that a pickup ahead of her had stopped to make a left-hand turn onto Golf Course Road. In order to avoid a collision, police said the driver of the SUV swerved into the northbound lane of US 41 where it collided with a pair of northbound motorcycles. The motorcyclists, a 65-year-old man and a 36 year-old woman, both from South Carolina, died at the scene, according to police
The driver of the SUV and two child passengers were evaluated at the scene by first responders and released.
A press release issued by the Michigan State Police on August 5 said the incident remains under investigation and any information gathered by police will be directed to the Houghton County Prosecutor. "Everything will be sent to the Prosecutor's Office for review," Miller said. "That's standard protocol with anything like this.”
Helmer said he is aware of the situation. "Rest assured I am staying on top of it," he said. "I'm going to make sure it gets reviewed for Charges."
