Chelsea Bossert/Daily Mining Gazette ichigan Tech’s campus is about to be crowded this Monday with new Huskies, returning students and parents helping their college-aged students move in.

HOUGHTON -- New Husky Orientation kicks off the week of Aug. 24 at Michigan Technological University. A crop of first-year college students, as well as transfers and international students will participate in actives across the week such as residence hall move-in days, new student presentations, downtown Houghton walk tours, a casino night at Wadsworth Hall and more.

Move-in has always been a campus-wide tradition at Michigan Tech. Dean of Students Kellie Raffaelli said. "We will have a huge group of staff, faculty administrators and students available to help our new Huskies move in," she said. "It's a wonderfully smooth process."

Raffaelli said after move-in, new students can experience all that Orientation week has to offer. Returning students also get to participate in certain activities, such as meeting the student organizations.

"Throughout the week there are events every single day, either organized by student leadership and Involvement or other departments throughout campus," she said. "There are opportunities for new students and returning students to meet different folks."

The Orientation Executive Staff at Tech is made up entirely of student workers. Quotes were shared with The Gazette, detailing the planning skills these students demonstrated when tasked with running orientation.

“This summer, I have had the privilege of working alongside and with amazing people," Programming Coordinator Garrett Whalen said. "This will be an experience I will never forget, and I hope the incoming freshmen feel the same way."

Lead Coordinator Lily Ketelsen said she looked at the new student experience and how she could make students feel more at-home at Tech. “Our team has invested a great deal of time and dedication to ensure every incoming student feels as welcomed and prepared as possible as they enter college," she said.

In addition to fun-filled, group activities like photo shoots, picnics and presentations, there will be other required events for students to attend. Six round table discussions and others on student wellness, will take place throughout the week.
