HOUGHTON -- It seemed like the month of August sped by us. Just like that schools are back in session and the summer is over. Part of the reason the month seemed rather quick and uneventful may have something to do with the weather pattern in the month. Essentially nothing special.
“It was honestly a rather quiet month, compared to July,” said National Weather Service Meteorologist Lily Chapman from the NWS Marquette office in Negaunee Township. Chapman describes the chances for showers and storms during the month as “sub-severe.”
“Storms on Aug. 7 & 8 did. pack a little more of a punch with 41 mph wind gusts reported in Pequaming.” Chapman said in general precipitation in the Copper Country ran well below normal, but temperatures were pretty much as to be expected. “Near normal temperatures started off the monthm but then began to run slightly below normal mid-month and onwards,” she said.
The highest temperature in the Houghton, Keweenaw and Baraga County area was 85, reported Aug. 4 in Baraga. Eighty plus degree temperatures were also reported at the Houghton County Airport (82°), Herman (81°) and Keasarge (84°). All of those high temperatures were recording between Aug. 1 – 8.
As expected, the lowest August temperatures were recorded in the last week of the month. Baraga, the community that recorded the highest temperature in August also reported the lowest at 39° on Aug. 24. Things were just a bit warmer on the Keweenaw Peninsula with the months lows in the 40s in Herman (43°) Kearsarge (48°) and the Houghton County Airport (47°).
Chapman said rainfall over the month was below normal with no reporting location recording more th an three inches of precipitation in Aug. Baraga wins the weather trifecta as the warmest, coldest and wettest community in the month. “Baraga recorded 2.82 inches of precipitation in August,” Chapman said. “The highest daily amount of rainfall occurred on Aug. 21 at just under an inch (.98″).”
Herman (2.53″) Kearsarge (2.32″) and Quincy Hill all reported dryer than normal precipitation as did the rest of the Keweenaw.
Looking ahead, according to Accuweather.com, Houghton’s September 2026 forecast shows daily high temperatures ranging from 53° to 77°, with overnight lows between 41° and 63°. The average high for September is 66° with an average low of 53°. The forecast also predicts precipitation at below normal for the month.
