HANCOCK -- Police are asking the public to be on the lookout for a vehicle which they say may have been involved in an alleged hit and run accident in Hancock over the weekend.

According to a press release, the Hancock City Police Department is actively investigating a hit-and-run accident that occurred in the early morning hours Saturday.

Police said that at approximately 2:30 a.m., a female pedestrian was crossing Quincy Street near Tezucco Street when she was struck by a dark-colored vehicle, causing serious injury.

Following the collision, the vehicle left the scene without helping the victim. The vehicle turned southbound onto Tezucco Street.

According to police, “Investigators have developed several promising leads regarding the vehicle and the person(s) involved and are actively following up on those leads. At this time, the department is limiting the release of additional details so as not to compromise the ongoing investigation.”

Hancock Police Lieutenant David Outinen said the incident is under investigation, as Hancock PD looks to identify the vehicle and driver involved. "We're still in the investigation process," Outinen said. "It was reported as a darker black vehicle that hit her and actually stopped and asked if she was okay, and then drove off." According to Outinen, the victim needed surgery over the weekend to address her injuries.

The Hancock Police Department is asking for the public’s help in the investigation. “Even with the leads investigators have developed, information from someone who witnessed the incident, saw a suspicious vehicle in the area, or may have information about a dark-colored vehicle involved could be extremely important in helping investigators resolve this case,” the press release states.

Hancock PD is asking anyone with information, no matter how insignificant it may seem, to contact them at 906-482-3102. “The Hancock Police Department appreciates the assistance and cooperation of the community,” the release states. Police add that no further information will be released at this time as the investigation remains active and ongoing.
