Calumet standoff ends peacefully

One taken into custody

CALUMET TOWNSHIP -- An armed standoff lasting several hours Tuesday ended with one person taken into custody. On Wednesday, 40-year-old Andrey Vladimirovich Petrov, appeared in Houghton County 97th District Court. Petrov is charged with assaulting a police officer, resisting/obstructing. He is currently being held on a $500,000 bond. He is next due in court on Oct. 16 after a mandated 30-day competency evaluation period.

According to a press release from the Houghton County Sheriff's Office, at approximately 4:45 a.m. Tuesday, Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to 25319 W. Pine St. in Calumet Township in response to a report of a fire in the roadway. Additionally nails were apprently intentionally scattered across the road.

Upon arrival, deputies attempted to make contact with a resident inside the home. According to the release, the individual locked himself in the garage and refused deputies' commands. The suspect eventually exited the garage at one point carrying a knife before entering the home while continuing to refuse commands. During the incident, the suspect was observed pointing a firearm at a deputy.

Shortly before 7 a.m. the Sheriff’s Department issues a public notice advising the public to avoid the area of M-203, Pine Street and 11th Street near the Village of Calumet. No further information was contained in the advisory.

The press release further states that law enforcement officers secured a perimeter around the residence from 10th Street to First Street, and from Cone Street to Pine Street/M-203. An arrest and search warrant was obtained, and the Michigan State Police Emergency Support Team was activated to assist.

While the warrant was being served, the suspect exited the house and allegedly threw knives at Emergency Support Team members, before retreating back inside, the release states.

At one point, a Michigan State Police (MSP) armored vehicle equipped with a front-mounted breaching ram was used to punch through two front windows of the Pine Street residence. The hydraulic boom was then lowered to tear away sections of the home’s exterior wall. An apparent law enforcement drone was seen circling the perimeter above the home during the standoff.

The Keweenaw County Sheriff's Office confirmed Wednesday morning that as tactical teams were breaching the front of the home, a loud detonation heard near the rear of the house during the standoff was a flashbang -- a tactical distraction device used to disorient a suspect.

At approximately 12:40 p.m., the suspect exited the residence and was taken into custody without further incident.

Arresting officer Charles Klein told The Daily Mining Gazette there remains no threat to the public. "The situation was resolved peacefully," Klein said.

The name of the suspect has been withheld pending arraignment in 97th District Court. Nada Wakeham, District Court clerk and magistrate, told The Daily Mining Gazette that the suspect was expected to be arraigned sometime Wednesday. The arraignment had not taken place at press time Wednesday.

The Houghton County Sheriff's Office was assisted by the Michigan State Police, the MSP Emergency Support Team, the Keweenaw County Sheriff’s Office, the Laurium Police Department, detectives with the UPSET West team, the Houghton County Road Commission, MDOT, Mercy Ambulance and Calumet Fire.
