HOUGHTON - Houghton Police Department Sergeant Kirk Mills has been promoted to the rank of lieutenant. Mills will replace former Lt. Nick Roberts, who retired Friday, after 33 years with the department.
Donnelly said Mills, an 11-year veteran with the department, served as the School Resource Officer at Houghton-Portage Township Schools. He was pivotal in the department's accreditation in 2023.
Donnelly said after joining the department, Mills was mentored by Roberts.
"That's one thing Lt. Roberts did," said Donnelly. "He's trained in a lot of people to be tied in with the community."
Last Friday, Roberts said it was time for him to step aside.
"It's time to let the let the younger officers take more control," he said. "They deserve it. We have great officers here, I trust them all."
Roberts is not disappointment with the officer selected to replace him.
"I will be leaving our department in trusted hands," he said. "He will work hard to work with the community."
