KEWEENAW COUNTY - The Keweenaw County Sheriff's Office confirmed it has joined in the search for a downstate man who was reported missing after a solo hiking trip to Isle Royale National Park, Sheriff Curt Pennala told the Daily Mining Gazette on Friday.
"We have personnel who have been deployed to support the operation," Pennala said. "I know the Michigan State Police also has a search and rescue team that has been flown out there and they're supporting the operation as well. The Michigan DNR also has members out there searching."
While Isle Royale National Park has not released information on its website, Click on Detroit reported Thursday that Craig Berg, 70, of Royal Oak, had arrived on the island Aug. 27 and was expected to leave Sept. 5. His family last heard from him Sept. 2.
Also on Thursday, Northern News Now, of Duluth, reported the National Park Service confirmed that a search is underway for Craig Berg, who was reported missing on Sunday.
"The National Park Service is searching for an overdue hiker at Isle Royale National Park," Northern News Now reported on its Facebook page. "The individual, from Royal Oak, Michigan, was scheduled to depart on Ranger III on Saturday, September 5. A report was made by the family on Sunday, September 6, that the hiker did not come home as planned. Search operations have been ongoing since that report.' said Isle Royale National Park Acting Administrative Officer Liz Valencia in an email to TV6."
Pennala said that was understanding as well.
"He did file a hiking itinerary with family and with the park," said Pennala, "but he's obviously overdue at this point, and we're trying to figure out what happened."
The Daily Mining Gazette initially learned of the situation Tuesday morning and contacted the Isle Royale National Park headquarters in Houghton. Personnel declined confirmation or comment, and Velencia did not return phone calls.
