Laurium to unveil DPW garage

LAURIUM -- The Village of Laurium has announced it will be holding the Grand Opening for the new Laurium Public Works Garage from 3-6 p.m. on Oct. 12 according to Village Manager Ian Lewis.
The ribbon cutting will take place at 3 p.m. with free food, beverages, and desserts being served immediately following the ribbon cutting.
The Village will be allowing walk-through tours for all who attend. Additionally, there will be an opportunity for kids to take pictures inside some of the heavy equipment.
The new DPW building replaces the one destroyed by fire just over a year ago. At the time of the fire, according to Village Trustee John Galbraith, all of the villages was in the building, with exception of the garbage truck and a truck with a cherry picker.
"To think where we were on the morning of February 5, 2025 to where we are now is difficult to put into words," Lewis said. "The time and energy that has been poured into this building by our staff, council, and community members is truly remarkable."
Without the community's strength, Laurium and the Copper Country, said Lewis, the village would not have been able to accomplish all that it has accomplished since the fire.
"Thank you to all of our community partners throughout this rebuilding process," he said. "We appreciate everyone that was there for our staff and community."
At the regular September meeting of the Laurium Village Council, Lewis told the council that the cold storage building was not completed at that time, as it needed plumbing work. Benches and lockers will be the last items installed.
Lewis said overall, the project was still within its completion date, which is early to mid-October for a grand opening.
