One person injured, one dead

Facebook photo According to a press release from the Ongonagon County Sheriff's Office, one person is dead and one injured as the result of a weekend shooting incident near the Ontonagon County community of Greenland.

GREENLAND -- One person is dead and one injured as the result of a weekend shooting incident in Ontonagon County. According to a press release from the Ontonagon County Sheriff’s Office, a deputy was dispatched shortly after 5 p.m. Saturday in response to a report of a gunshot wound. The shooting allegedly occurred at a resident in the 600 block Depot Street in Greenland Township.

The Monday press release states that upon arrival, the deputy was able to safely extract a female victin from from the residence and transport her to EMS who were staged away from the scene. Other responding officers were than able to locate the suspect on a neighboring property.

Officers tactically approached the vehicle and found a male suspect deceased from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. The incident is still under investigation and the Sheriff’s Office said further details will be released at a later date.

Assisting on the scene were deputies from the Houghton County Sheriff's Office, Houghton City Police, Michigan State Police Walkefield and Calumet posts, MSP Region Eight Headquarters Forensic Crime Lab, SONCO North and SONCO South ambulance service, Aspirus Medivac, Bay Ambulance, Ontonagon County Medical Examiner's Office, cane Funeral Home, and Hulk Towing.
