Tech releases enrollment figures

HOUGHTON -- Michigan Technological University has officially ushered in a new academic year and welcomed the undergraduate class of 2030. Tech officially unveiled its enrollment figures and university statistics for the 2026-2027 school year Friday. According to figures released by the University, enrollment dropped by nearly five percent from last year's numbers.
Michigan Tech has a total of 7,054 students for its fall 2026 semester, announcing a 4.8% drop in enrollment from this time last year. This could be explained by a decline in graduate student enrollment. While Tech has not made its graduate student figures public from its 2026 Census Day results, a Clearinghouse article points to a 4.3% drop in international graduate student enrollment across the country, including a 9.2% decline in four-year public institutions.
Vice President for University Relations and Enrollment John Lehman said the university is not immune to national enrollment shifts and trends.
“Choosing Michigan Tech has always been an intentional decision. Students come here
for rigorous academics, hands-on education and a distinctive campus environment that
challenges them to grow," he said in the Census day release. "The students making that choice come to campus with impressive preparation, experiences and accomplishments, and they arrive ready to do Michigan Tech-level work."
The release noted Tech's quality of students has not changed, even when enrollment figures have been in decline. Just two years ago, Tech's enrollment increased by 1.5% from the 2023-2024 academic year.
Tech incoming undergraduate class scored 9 points higher than last year's class on average for their Sat scores. The average SAT score for the class of 2030 was 1234, compared to last year's 1225 average score. Michigan Tech also noted in its findings the class of 2030 accrued 22 college credits on average before becoming new Huskies.
According to its fall figures, the median early career earnings for Tech alumni is $84,560.
Tech attributes this number to its student’s pre-graduation efforts, pursuing co-ops, internships and other applied learning ventures.
Tech highlighted its newest achievements and programs, including its new School of Health, Human and Biological systems and AI degrees.
