Council addresses more than Navy Street

HANCOCK -- While the Navy Street issue continues to dominate news from Hancock, the City Council completed some action it its Wednesday regular meeting including the approval of nine agenda items. Two resolutions were approved, one laying out an MDOT Transit Master Agreement for the next five years. The second one, updates city parking fines, an annual affair which City Manager Mary Babcock said coincides with the city's updated parking ordinance. "That's going to be on the agenda for Oct. 21," she said.
After months of searching, the city council authorized the purchase of a used street sweeper for $165,000, with four payments of $41,250. Babcock said the old model was from 2002. "Our DPW mechanic found this used one that fits the bill," she said.
Other business included city improvements on paving, water, sewer and its MiSites space. Babcock added Prospect Street repairs will be finished at by week’s end. She also gave other street project updates.
"It does not look like Grove Street that we approved last night will get done this year," she said. "But we've had miscellaneous paving around the city that has been completed."
Council officially endorsed the Hancock Area District Library's millage proposal. The library would levy .7 mills over five years, generating around $180,000 per year to fund library services.
The City of Hancock now has a new insurance carrier. MML (Michigan Municipal League) Liability and Property Pool lists their annual premium for Hancock at $185,131. Babcock said the deductible and benefits were better than its previous carrier.
The next city council meeting will be on Oct. 21 at City Hall. The council will not meet earlier in the month due to scheduling conflicts.
