Harvest Moon Night Market returns

CALUMET -- For fans of witchy, woodland or whimsical attire, mixed with local artists and music, the Harvest Moon Night Market returns for its second year in downtown Calumet. This year, the market expands to the Calumet Theatre Ballroom, Open Space Gallery and the Calumet Greenspace. It will be open from 4-9 p.m. Sunday.
Danielle Perkowitz of hosting organization Whimsiqueers said the community wants events like this one. "Last year was overall a very positive experience," she said. "We really just learned that the community wanted more immersive and themed markets. So, what we really took away from that is we needed to expand."
Perkowitz said she and Whimsiqueers want to bring more of everything to the table. Wolf's Head Film will host a special film screening inside the Open Space Gallery. The Night Market will also feature performances by Arika Rose, Other Side of Pewabic, Gibryn, Cicada, Jo Po, Tom Paerish and a sound bath with Musical Zen. There will also be food trucks and vendors with baked goods and sweet treats.
While there is no official dress code, Perkowitz said costumes are encouraged for this pre-Halloween event. "We've seen some really unique and creative costumes in the past," she said. "We just encourage folks to lean into that [theme] and come dressed for an immersive experience."
According to Perkowitz, Vendor Alley is growing this year, offering even more opportunities to discover handcrafted goods and seasonal treats. The interactive elements are returning as well, including tarot readings, henna, craft demonstrations and more. Perkowitz said the interactive portions of the market will add another sense of other worldly transformation to downtown Calumet. "There'll be a lot of those fun, unique touches that make the market so immersive," she said.
Whimsiqueers is made up of Keweenaw creatives Nikki Madisen, Aleksi Gray and Perkowitz. It's a connection Perkowitz said is key to running a successful night market. "I think all three of us are just whimsical people naturally," she said. "We approach things with that sort of creative and enthusiastic energy."
The Second Harvest Moon Night Market kicks off at 4 p.m. Sunday at the Greenspace, Open Space Gallery and the Calumet Theatre Ballroom -- all on 5th Street in downtown Calumet. The event is free to enter.
