ONTONAGON -- Officials from Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park are searching for its park sign which was taken between Saturday evening and Sunday morning. The popular roadside stop along the 107th Engineers Memorial Highway was last seen intact around 8:30 p.m. Saturday.
The Porkies went public with a call for the stolen sign to return Wednesday morning. Park Manager Michael Knack said the sign is an iconic piece of the park which needs to be returned. "It provides a great backdrop of what the Porkies is," he said. "Everybody that comes to the Porkies for their first time takes their picture with that sign."
According to Knack, the sign was installed in the early 2000s. It is around eight feet wide and four feet fall and is made of considerably thick wood.
Knack said Park Rangers noticed the sign was missing as they were reporting to work Sunday morning.
"Their headlights went by the sign and realized it was missing. Only the concrete base was there," he said. "The person that stole it left the screws and bolts sitting on the concrete pad."
At press time, the Porkies is asking the public to keep an eye out for the sign. Although, Knack added he is in the process of ordering a new sign -- something which could take months to produce.
The state park on said on Facebook it will take back the sign -- no questions asked. Knack said there are no leads yet to where the sign could ave gone, or who took it.
"That's the sign that greets and welcomes guests and tourists from all over the world when they come to small Ontonagon, Mich." Knack said.
Anyone with a lead as to where the sign may be can either call Porcupine Mountains Park Headquarters at 906-885-5275, ext. 0. The Ontonagon County Sheriff's Office can also be contacted at 906-884-4901.
