HOUGHTON -- Historically, turn-out in mid-term elections pale in comparison to presidential-year elections. Whatever the reason, interest in yesterdays mid-term election seem to be fairly high. The Daily Mining Gazette paid a visit to a couple of polling places Tuesday Morning. At the two Houghton precincts more than 400 voters cast ballots before noon.

Officials in Hancock report a turnout much heavier than the August primary. A poll worker at Hancock’s Precinct 3 reported that as of noon, 400 votes had been cast at that location alone. “That’s about what we normally see in a day,” they said. “It has been very robust all morning.”

Houghton County Commissioner Gretchen Jansen, who is not up for election, told the Daily Mining Gazette Tuesday’s solid turnout was in addition to strong early voting numbers. “I feel like they [voters] are very engaged,” Jansen said. “Clerk (Jennifer) Kelly mentioned there were 2,000 early votes that came in. I think today’s going to be a really busy day at all the polling stations.”

Polls in most locations opened at 7 a.m. Tuesday and were expected to close at 8 p.m. There were several contested elections for state, county, township, village and city officers at well as many local school boards. While no results were available at press time, the Daily Mining Gazette will have complete coverage in Wednesday edition.
