HOUGHTON - The state’s expanded nine-day early in-person voting window concluded on Sunday afternoon, representing the first major presidential cycle to feature the localized voting center in Houghton County and if early voting turnout is any indicator, Tuesday should see a high number of voters turning out at the polls.
Houghton County Clerk Jennifer Kelly said this cycle's vote count was much higher than August's and she was excited to see that.
"I'm very happy with it," she said."For nine days, we had a total of $1,945."
While there are some 28,000 registered voters in the county, Kelly said just under 2,000 is an impressive number.
"It’s better than in August for the primary," she said. "We only had 273 for nine days."
According to Kelly, the election workers who managed the early voting location will work with the chief deputy on Tuesday night to finalize the early tallies once precinct operations conclude.
"So at the early voting center, the workers that worked the nine days will be there with my chief deputy, Kelly said, "and they will close the polls at 8 p.m. just like every other precinct and then bring their results here."
