Teen injured in crash near Soo

SAULT STE. MARIE — A teen from the Eastern Upper Peninsula was seriously injured as the result of a single-vehicle rollover accident Tuesday in Chippewa County. In a press release, Michigan State Police (MSP) from the Sault Ste. Marie Post said the mishap happened shortly before 4 p.m. Tuesday afternoon on I-75 near Three Mile Road in Soo Township. Police said the 18-year-old driver was ejected and injured in the rollover crash after losing control of his vehicle.

The preliminary investigation indicates the passenger car was traveling southbound on I-75 when the driver left the road into the median and lost control of the vehicle. The car then rolled over, and the driver, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected from the vehicle.

The driver, an 18-year-old man from Dafter, sustained serious injuries and was transported to MyMichigan Medical Center in Sault Ste. Marie, for treatment. No other vehicles or passengers were involved.

MSP said the incident remains under investigation. Drugs or alcohol do not appear to have been factors. Both southbound and northbound lanes of I-75 were partially closed while emergency personnel responded, and troopers conducted an on-scene investigation. As of 6:40 p.m. Tuesday all lanes of I-75 have been fully reopened.

MSP was assisted by the Sault Ste. Marie Police Department, Sault Tribe Police Department, Sault Ste. Marie Fire Department, Soo Township Fire Department, US Border Patrol, and Chippewa County Central Dispatch.
