Beach assessment from a local beachgoer

Summer returns to the Copper Country. Our local beaches have been busier than ever with the warmer temperature and sunny weather. The sunny days brought out big crowds throughout the area. Chassell Park to Houghton, Hancock, Calumet’s Waterworks Beach to Bete Gris Beach up north are only a few of the many options. Warm water, beautiful blue skies and a bright sun made for some spectacular recent beach weather. Set your agenda. Beach days are here!

Houghton’s beach was packed the most with a wide array of visitors and children. This beach makes it easy to enjoy a picnic lunch or dinner. There’s a multitude of picnic tables with sturdy big blue umbrellas covering the tables. It makes a nice spot to pack a picnic and stay awhile or grab takeout from a local restaurant to enjoy. There’s also a volleyball sand court and a toddler area to climb that are great additions. There’s plenty of swings available as well. Houghton’s beach is top-notch even with a crowd.

Chassell’s beach is a nice relaxing place to visit and picnic also. There’s a beautiful newer children’s playground and swings. It makes a great beach stop and is an absolute memory maker for little ones. Remember to take a cooler of snacks and lunch. Wear sunglasses and sunscreen or simply wear a shirt, bring a sun umbrella or find some shade. A stinging sun-burnt back is no fun. Chassell beach has amazing scenery here to enjoy no matter the temperature. Kids of all ages love this peaceful beach.

Across the bridge again, Hancock Beach had a full house nearly, too. Every area and play structure was in use. From the docks to the swings to the sand volleyball court. Lines at the concession stand. College-age kids on the bigger swings. Toddlers playing in the sand and parents visiting and enjoying another perfect summer day. Teens jumped off the dock, while others splashed in the water. It couldn’t get any better.

Calumet’s Waterworks was hopping, too. From toddlers to tourists to locals, people were swimming and rock-picking and sunbathing. The basketball court was in use with a fast competitive game going on. There were remnants of a few old fires on the beach. All dogs were on appropriate leashes. There are plenty of restaurants nearby in Calumet for an after-beach dinner. Cell service can be spotty depending on your service provider.

One recent visitor from Illinois lost a couple rock-hounding tools due to sudden waves that pulled them out into the lake. Definitely put life jackets on little ones swimming here. The waves are serious.

The black flies were only mildly out again. The water was cooler but refreshingly tolerable with the higher outdoor temperature. The picnic pavilions and horseshoes were in use near the parking lot. The beach is a popular summer destination for travelers and locals. This beach in particular is a star for watching sunrises and sunsets alike. It’s nearly always worth that effort to come early or stay longer. Lake Superior’s shoreline is a star show in itself.

Bete Gris beach, a tad north, is definitely worth the drive. It never disappoints. Absolutely stunning scenery and soft sand. All ages love this beach. It’s easy to enjoy due to it’s right off the main highway. The beach is nearly always busy especially on warmer days. Recently the water for swimming was a bit warmer than Calumet Waterworks. Pack up the toys, beach towels and blankets. This beach is one you want to stay awhile to enjoy. Remember to pack warmer clothes just if the temperature drops as it sometimes does that close to the big lake.

However, there were some decent whitecaps. Definitely days that require real life jackets for children while swimming. No black flies or bugs due to the wind so that’s a positive aspect. There’s a few picnic tables so it’s also a great picnic spot. It’s an ideal spot for relaxing away.

Pack a nice picnic in case you feel like watching the sunset. Additionally there’s a small restroom available across the highway. Again, Lake Superior, so it’s a top location for sunrises and sunsets. Pack essential necessities as it’s further away.

Bete Gris is a perfect backdrop for a wonderful, memorable summer day – one you will certainly never forget.
