HOUGHTON -- With the first snow of the season in the air yesterday, it may be time to turn in old gear and purchase something new. The Copper Country Ski Tigers are hosting their annual Ski Gear Swap from 11:30 a.m. thru 1 p.m., today at Houghton High School.
Club President Traci Webb said this is the Tigers' biggest fundraising event of the year. "All of the proceeds from the sale will go directly to supporting our youth and junior programs here -- skiers from age 5-18," she said. "It costs a lot to operate our programs and we do a lot of fundraising in order to offset those costs that families have to pay to participate."
The Tigers take a 20% commission from the gear sold. Webb said everything having to do with winter sports and the outdoors can be sold at the swap. "The Ski Tigers have been around for over 35 years and for a large portion of that, one of our major fundraisers for this club has been this gear swap," she said. "We host a swap where families can clean out their shed or their garage and have a place to share or to sell the gear that their children or themselves have outgrown, as well as a place for our members to shop for quality youth gear."
Webb said the club is primarily taking cross-country skis, but the swap will also have outdoor clothes, downhill skis, bikes, kayaks, golf clubs and other outdoor gear. Sellers are encouraged to get to HHS from 8:30 a.m. thru 11 a.m.
According to Webb, being active outdoors is important for everyone, but especially for children during the winter months. "It is important for people to go outside, participate in healthy activities and promote an enjoyment of the winter so that we have healthy kids, families and adults," she said. "This is an opportunity to get kids away from screens. Especially at the younger ages, we focus on camaraderie not he trails."
