Ecological art exhibit and public wolf discussion

Michigan Tech’s College of Forest Resources and Environmental Sciences and Department of Visual and Performing Arts are excited to announce the multimedia art exhibit, The Spirit of the Hunt, presented in collaboration with Project Coyote. The exhibit will take place Aug. 28 – Oct. 17, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Michigan Tech’s Noblet Building. The exhibit is guest curated by Catherine Plank, a graduate student in Ecosystem Science and Management at the University of Michigan.

Project Coyote is a national non-profit that promotes conservation and coexistence between people and wildlife. One of the project’s goals is “to create lasting solutions for resilient carnivore populations, where native carnivores are valued for their critical ecological role.”

The exhibit is intended to raise awareness about the U.P’s wolf population. It coincides with legislation under consideration regarding wolf management in Michigan. Bills have recently been proposed that could impact the well-being of the wolf population by altering the Wolf Management Advisory Council. Curator Catherine Plank arranged the exhibit to create discussion and to highlight the beauty and value of native predators.

An opening event takes place on Friday, September 3 at 4:30pm at Michigan Tech’s College of Forest Resources. It includes a discussion facilitated by Catherine Plank and Dr. John Vucetich (Michigan Tech). Vucetich will discuss wolf hunts and “keystone species:” living things that have an outsized effect on the environments around them.

Local and national artists are featured in the exhibit, including Michigan artists Joyce Koskenmaki and Ladislav Hanka. Exhibition works are for sale, with proceeds donated to Project Coyote.

All events are free and open to the public.
