George Gribaldo

WOLVERINE – George Gribaldo, 92, a resident of Wolverine, passed away on Saturday, Feb 22, 2014, at the Aspirus Keweenaw Hospital.

He was born in Wolverine on May 20, 1921, a son of the late Joseph and Rose (Chiado) Gribaldo and attended the Wolverine and Centennial Schools.

He lived nearly all of his life in Wolverine except for a short time when he lived in Detroit while he was employed by National Twist Drill.

Locally, he worked at various jobs and before his retirement he was employed by Calumet and Hecla Mining Company.

George was a member of the Keweenaw Catholic Community. He was also a member of the Christopher Columbus Society and a former member of the Skinny Club and served as their cook for many years.

He enjoyed gardening and canning the vegetables and was an excellent cook with his specialty being Italian sausage.

His greatest joy was to spend time with his great-great nieces and nephews and his special neighbors, Tanner Pennala, Kaitlyn, Alex and Allison Pennala.

He was preceded in death by his parents; four Sisters, Anna, Theresa Tulppo, Irene Lynch, Barbara Sevon; two Brothers, John (Jerry) Gribaldo and Louis Gribaldo; and a nephew, Patrick Sevon.

He is survived by nieces and nephews, Katharine Lindley, George (Caroline) Sevon, Michael Sevon, Rea (Jerry) Switzer, Barbara (Dave) Jukuri, Carla (Bob) Rowe, Louis Gribaldo, and Florence (Tom) Nogle; his great nieces and nephews, Tom Lindley, Maida Demo, David and Michael Paul Sevon, Kristen Roberts, Caitlin Sevon, Suzanne Sanregret, Karen Kukkonen, Kristine Weidner, David B. Jukuri, Rob and Michael Rowe, Joanne Kulbacki, Connie and Michael Nogle; and several great-great-nieces and nephews.

George’s family would like to thank Curt and Lars Pennala and Dr. Bonnie Hafeman for the many years of caring for him, and also the staff on the third floor at Aspirus Keweenaw for the excellent care and comfort that was given to him.

As per George’s request, cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held later in the spring at which time it will be announced.
