Edith Evelyn Kuopus
HANCOCK – Edith Evelyn Kuopus, 99, passed away on Thursday, July 2, 2015, at PortagePointe in Hancock, where she had been a resident patient for several years.
Evelyn, as she was known by her family and friends, was born on January 6, 1916, in Atlantic Mine, the daughter of Arthur and Edith “Mary” (Johnson) Lampinen.
She grew up in Atlantic Mine and attended the Adams Township Schools.
Evelyn married Russell Kuopus on July 23, 1944, in Hancock. Soon after, they moved to the metropolitan Detroit area, where they made their home for many years.
Evelyn worked as a waitress during World War II, served her country as one of many “Rosie the Riveters” in the production of airplanes for the war effort.
Upon retirement, Evelyn and Russ returned to the Copper Country and lived in Dodgeville for several years, later moving to Arbor Green in Houghton.
Evelyn continued to live at Arbor Green for many years after Russ’s death in 1993, moving to PortagePointe in 2007.
Throughout her life, Evelyn was a loving caregiver to many family members and friends, always willing to lend a helping hand and give support.
She was a member of Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Atlantic Mine, where she assisted with many church activities.
Most of all, Evelyn cherished the many dogs that she and Russ gave loving homes to all of their married life, forever carrying with her the many precious memories of them.
In addition to her husband and parents, Evelyn was also preceded in death by her five siblings, brothers, Edward “Archie” Lampinen and Eino “Lel” Lampinen; and sisters, Esther Lampinen Hakala, Elaine Lampinen Lassila Maatta, and Mary Lou Lampinen Howard.
Evelyn is survived by several nieces and nephews, Gloria (Paul) Briski, Patricia (Dick) Yates, Edith Nesmith, Ginny Corbin, Helen St. Jean, Diana “Dusty” Lampinen, Linda (Steve) Routsala, Annie Lampinen, Dennis (Lois) Howard, Edward Lampinen and Joseph Lampinen, along with numerous cousins and other extended family members. In addition, Evelyn is survived by a special cousin, Judy (Robert) Haataja, who provided her with many years of caring assistance.
The family would like to thank the staff at the Pewabic House for the wonderful care given to Evelyn over the years and to the entire staff at PortagePointe for their kindness and compassion.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, July 10, 2015, in the Mountain View Mortuary in South Range, with Pastor Bucky Beach to officiate.
Visitation will be 1 hour prior to the service on Friday in the mortuary.
Inurnment will follow at the Forest Hill Cemetery in Houghton.
In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, the family requests donations be made to the Copper Country Humane Society, P.O. Box 453, Houghton, MI 49931, in memory of Evelyn’s lifelong devotion to her pets.
