Dennis “Muzzy” Massoglia

Dennis “Muzzy” Massoglia, 62, a resident of Calumet and East Grosse Point Shores passed away on Wednesday January 6, 2016 peacefully at his home with his family at his side.

The location of the Funeral Mass for Dennis has been changed to Sacred Heart Church in Calumet and will be held Sunday, January 10, 2016, at 2:00 PM in the Sacred Heart Church in Calumet with Fr. Paul Manderfield to officiate and with Deacon Art Stancher to assist. Friends may call at the Erickson Crowley Peterson Funeral Home in Calumet ?from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM on Saturday January 9, 2016.

Dennis ‘Muzzy’ Massoglia

CALUMET – Dennis “Muzzy” Massoglia, 62, a resident of Calumet and East Grosse Point Shores, passed away on Wednesday, January 6, 2016, peacefully at his home with his family at his side.

He was born on February 23, 1953, to John and Anna (Butkovich) Massoglia in Laurium. He attended Calumet High School, graduating with the Class of 1971.

After high school, he attended Michigan Technological University, graduating with a bachelors degree in civil engineering, a bachelors degree in mathematics, and a masters degree in education.

He worked as a baker at both Thurner’s Bakery and Quality Supervalue in Laurium.

Dennis was a basketball coach for 36 years. He started in 1979 as a Junior High Boys Basketball coach, winning the first Junior High Boys Basketball Championship. In 1984, he began coaching Junior High Girls Basketball, where in which he coached for 30 years; winning 11 Junior High Girls Championships; retiring in 2014.

He was a teacher at Washington Middle School for 23 years, teaching eighth grade mathematics. He was also a CLK Board of Education member and Student Council Advisor for the Washington Middle School.

Dennis was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Calumet and St. Francis of Assisi of Dollar Bay. He also served as the CLK Religious Education Director.

On January 1, 1989, he married the love of his life, Nancy Dollar, at the Sacred Heart Church in Calumet.

He is preceded in death by his parents and three sisters; Dorothy Chopp, Shirley Houle, and Maggie Wendell.

Dennis is survived by his wife, Nancy, of Dollar Bay; sons; Chris of Laurium and Patrick of Laurium; daughters, Jessica of Dollar Bay, Katie of Marquette and Allison of Hancock; 7 grandchildren, Cheyenne, Hunter, Vyla, Evalyn, Piper, Nathan and Petra; brothers, Jack (Sandy) Massoglia of Houghton, Mike (Noel) Massoglia of Calumet, Bob Massoglia of Kalamazoo and Dave Massoglia of Calumet; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for Dennis will be held on Sunday, January 10, 2016 at 2 p.m. at Siskiwit Reception Hall in Calumet, with Deacon Art Stancher to officiate.

Friends may call at the Erickson Crowley Peterson Funeral Home in Calumet from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday, January 9, 2016.
