HANCOCK – John Michael “Mike” McCarthy, 73, a former residing in Hancock, passed away at his home early on Saturday morning, July 30, 2016.

A combined graveside service for John “Mike” McCarthy and his wife Frances McCarthy will be held at 6 p.m. on Monday evening, August 8, 2016 at the family lot of Forest Hill Cemetery (Section 8) in Houghton with Rev. Fr. John Martignon to officiate.

Memorials in lieu of flowers may be directed to the Hancock Public Schools Foundation, 501 Campus Dr, Hancock, MI 49930 in the name of John M. McCarthy.

John Michael “Mike” McCarthy

HANCOCK – John Michael “Mike” McCarthy, 73, former local attorney residing in Hancock, passed away at his home early on Saturday morning, July 30, 2016.

He was born in Hancock on August 16, 1942, to the late Francis “Pinky” and Linnea (Steve) McCarthy.

Following graduation from Hancock High School in 1961, he attended Michigan Tech University, later graduating from Cooley Law School in Lansing.

He worked in New York State for a time before returning to the Copper Country for his extended career as an attorney until his retirement.

Mike was married to Frances Hall. She preceded him in death last year on December 17, 2015.

He enjoyed playing pool and belonged to the Copper Country Pool League. Among his many hobbies, he enjoyed restoring cars, woodworking, coin collecting and was an avid reader.

Besides his parents; he was also preceded in death by his uncles, John, Timothy, George, Robert, and Albert McCarthy; and aunts, Florence Anderson, Mary Schaefer, Kay McLean and Marcella McCarthy.

He is survived by his son, Christopher R. McCarthy of Laurium; many cousins, nieces, nephews, his best friend, Todd Bessner; and special friends, Annette Schaefer and Jeanne Eilola.

Graveside services will be held later at the family lot of Forest Hill Cemetery in Houghton with Rev. Fr. John Martignon to officiate.

Special thanks is given to Dr. Michael Louma and staff at Aspirus Keweenaw Hospital, caregivers at Cypress Manor and his home caregivers.
