Shirley Lorraine Ronkainen

HANCOCK – Shirley Lorraine Ronkainen, 77, a life-long Hancock resident, died Sunday, August 28, 2016, at Aspirus Keweenaw Hospital. She had been a resident patient at the Houghton County Medical Care Facility in Hancock for the past nine years.

She was born February 14, 1939, in Mason Location, a daughter of the late Reginald and Lorraine (Goldquist) Odgers and was a 1957 graduate of the Hancock Central High School.

Shirley worked at the former St. Joseph’s Hospital and the Twin City Style Shop in Hancock and Vertin’s in Houghton. She retired from Michigan Tech after 22 years in food service at the Memorial Union Building.

Shirley was married to Norman Ronkainen in January of 1958. He preceded her in death on July 2, 1977.

Shirley was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist of Houghton. She was a gadget enthusiast and loved to sing and play portable video games.

Shirley loved her family and will be remembered as a wonderful grandmother and great-grandmother.

Surviving is her daughter, Susan (Nedal) Mustafa of Abu Dhabi, UAE; six grandchildren, Logan, Sami (Asma), Hamza (fiance’ Masha), Laila, Omar (Nour), and Nadia; two great-grandchildren, Yousuf and Adam; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Besides her parents and husband, Shirley was also preceded in death by a daughter, Kim Ronkainen; and two sisters, Marcia and Mary.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, August 31, 2016, at the Jukuri-Antila Funeral Home in Hancock. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service on Wednesday, August 31, 2016. Interment will be in the Lakeside Cemetery in Hancock.
