Wayne A. Torgeson

HANCOCK — Wayne A. Torgeson, 80, a resident of Hancock, passed away at home on Sunday evening, November 20, 2016, following a lengthy illness.

He was born on August 6, 1936, in Elgin, Illinois, the son of the late Walter H. and Eleanor (Myers) Torgeson.

Wayne was raised in Woodstock, Illinois, where he was a graduate of the Woodstock High School. He received his bachelor’s degree from Carthage College and then received his master’s degree from Michigan State University.

In 1960, he began a career as a counselor in Wadsworth Hall at the Michigan College of Mining and Technology and he retired in 1994, as the Director of Auxiliary Services for Michigan Technological University.

On July 30, 1960, he was united in marriage to the former Sharon Rehberg. The couple has resided in Hancock since 1965, where they raised their children.

Wayne was an active member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Hancock, where he had served on various committees over the years.

He was a founding member of Boy Scout Troop 2007 of Hancock and had been very active with the Central and National Auxiliary Service Associations for Universities during his working career.

More recently, he served on the Hancock Housing Commission and enjoyed playing bridge each week with the Old Geezers. He also enjoyed living in the Copper Country, bird hunting and fishing.

Surviving are his wife, Sharon Torgeson of Hancock; his children, Steve Torgeson of Hancock, Janis Torgeson of Hancock;  and several cousins.

A memorial service for Wayne will be held 1 p.m. on Wednesday, November 23, 2016, at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church of Hancock with Rev. DJ Raisner to officiate. Inurnment will be in the church’s columbarium.

Friends may call on Wednesday, November 23, 2016, from noon until the time of services at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church of Hancock.

In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, the family suggests that memorials be given to Gloria Dei Lutheran Church of Hancock in memory of Wayne A. Torgeson.
