Calvin N. Waisanen

HOUGHTON – Dr. Calvin North Waisanen, DDS, 72, of Houghton, passed away on Thursday, January 5, 2017, at University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor.

He was born on November 26, 1944, in Hancock, the son of Dr. Carl and Dora (Koski) Waisanen.

Calvin graduated from Dollar Bay High School in 1962. He received a bachelor degree from Northern Michigan University a master’s degree from Michigan State University and D.D.S. from University of Michigan, in 1974 and was awarded a Mott Fellowship while at University of Michigan.

He had a private dental practice for over 30 years in Houghton, retired to Ann Arbor to be closer to his family and decided to practice dentistry for another 10 years in Saline.

Calvin spent his winters in Florida, summers in Houghton and the remainder of his time in Ann Arbor, near family.

He was a member of First Lutheran Church in Dollar Bay.

Calvin was a Gold Life Master in bridge. He earned his A.C.B.L. teaching accreditation and loved to teach the game of bridge. He was a member of the Ann Arbor City Club, Orlando Bridge Center and Burns City Club.

Calvin loved U. of M. sports, especially the golf team and was a supporter of the golf team. He spent years teaching and coaching the game of golf. Calvin also enjoyed spending time with his family.

Surviving are his children, Steven (Betty) Waisanen of Belleville, Elena (Idris) Sherrod of Whitmore Lake, Maija Waisanen of Houghton; brother, Dr. Melvin (Terri) Waisanen of Jackson; sister, Heidi (Rick) Waligora of Lansdale, Pennsylvania; sister-in-law, Carol Waisanen of Houghton; grandchildren, Jazalyn, Idris, Ryan, Britta, Shane, Harrison; uncle, Roy “Buddy” (Eila) Koski of Aura; special friend, Flora More of Ann Arbor; and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and extended family.

Preceding him in death are his parents and brother, David Waisanen.

A funeral service will be held in the spring. Burial will be in the Aura Cemetery.
