Kenneth Steiner

HOUGHTON – Kenneth Steiner, 66, a resident of Houghton, passed away Sunday morning, January 1, 2017, at the UP Health Systems-Marquette Hospital where he had been a patient for the past four days.

Ken was born on November 3, 1950, in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, a son of the late Carl and Lois (Koch) Steiner. He was raised in Chicago and Detroit. Since early 1970, he has made his home in the Copper Country.

Mr. Steiner had worked as a cook at Funkey’s Karma Kafe and was a founding member of the Keweenaw Co-op. He cooked at the Consumers Advocate, Harbor Haus, Pilgrim River Steak House, Ripley Ski Hill, Roy’s Bakery, along with various restaurants in the area.

He volunteered with Little Brother’s Friends of the Elderly for 30 years.

He reffed College Volley Ball, umpired baseball and played in the local softball leagues for many years and was also active with the local Audubon Society, helping with many bird counts in the area.

He traveled and sang with the Michigan Tech concert choir and spent many nights jamming on his harmonica with different musicians in the area.

Ken also was an avid runner who was proud to have finished the Grandma’s Marathon in Duluth, Minnesota.

Surviving are his daughter, Amber Silberg-Steiner of Velva, North Dakota; seven brothers and sisters; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A time to remember Ken will be held 7 p.m. on Friday, January 6, 2017, at Rozsa Center on Michigan Tech’s Campus. An open visitation for Ken will be held on Friday, January 6, 2017 from 5:30 p.m. until time of services at the Rozsa Center’s Lobby.

All musicians are welcome to join together in the lobby of the Rozsa’s Center, following the service for one more jam session in Ken’s memory.

In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, the family suggests that memorials be given to Little Brothers Friends of the Elderly in Kenneth Steiner’s memory.
