Mary Patricia Anderson

CLARKSTON — Mary Pat Anderson (nee McCarthy), 91, born February 20, 1928, passed away peacefully at home in Clarkston, Mich. on September 17, 2019.

Mary Pat, as most have known her, grew up in the Highland Park area near Detroit. Being the only girl with four brothers, she adapted nicely. Her brothers were very involved in speed skating and she, too, took up the sport, ice skating daily in the winter as well as competing. Mary Pat also loved motorcycles, even a member of a motorcycle club in the 1940’s. She met and married her husband, John H. “Howie” Anderson in September 1950. They were married 61 years until his death in 2011.

Mary Pat and her husband ran two businesses in the Upper Peninsula, where they relocated from Detroit in 1973, the Village Pub Bar and At the Wagon Wheel Cottage Rentals, from from 1973-2003. In 2003, they returned to the lower peninsula to Livonia. Mary Pat cared for her husband, who was wheelchair-bound for 22 years. She was the best caregiver. Mary Pat was the kindest and most humble human being God ever put on this earth, never judging or giving unsolicited advice. She raised her eight children to be hard-working, respectable human beings. She will be missed greatly.

Mary Pat, was preceded in death by her husband, John H. Anderson; parents, Patrick J. and Mary (Carr) McCarthy; her brothers, Jack, Gerald, James and Charles McCarthy. Sadly, Mary Pat was also preceded in death by two of her eight children, Kevin C. Anderson and Mary Lou Anderson.

She is survived by her children, Keith (Linda) Anderson, Kenneth (Tammy) Anderson, James (Pamela) Anderson, Patricia (Matthew) Sikowski, Janice (Timothy) Peavley, and Lori (Randy) Veihl. Mary Pat had 20 grandchildren, and 17 great-grandchildren, one of which, Violet, preceded her in death in 2014.

The Andersons will receive guests at the Heeney-Sundquist Funeral Home, Farmington, on Friday, September 20th, from 2-8 p.m., with a 7 p.m. rosary. Visitation will resume Saturday morning at 10:00 a.m. until the start of Mary Pat’s funeral ceremony at 1 p.m. Private interment will take place later at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, with her husband, Howie, and son, Kevin. Memorial contributions are suggested to Hospice of Michigan or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
