Josephine Eakin

HURONTOWN — Josephine Eakin, 79, a resident of Hurontown, passed away on Saturday, November 23, 2019, at the Light House of Hancock, where she had been a resident patient since this past July.

She was born on August 9, 1940, in Trimountain, a daughter of the late Nicholas and Mary (Koricic) Katalin. Josephine was raised in Painesdale and was a graduate of the Jeffers High School. She then worked for a short time in the housekeeping department at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Hancock.

In 1962, she was united in marriage to David Eakin. The couple had resided in the Detroit area and Houghton. In 1978, they moved to make their home in Hurontown. In 1994, David and Josephine parted ways.

For 38 years, Josephine was the cook and house mom for a Phi Kappa Theta Fraternity at Michigan Technological University.

Ms. Eakin was a member of St. Ignatius Loyola Catholic Church in Houghton, where she was active with the Altar Society helping with the funeral lunches for many years. She enjoyed getting out of the house bumming around going to rummage sales and visiting with family and friends.

She is preceded in death by her daughter, Carolyn Eakin; her parents; and her twin sister, Francie Hiltunen.

She is survived by her daughter, Darlene “Dar” Eakin of Hurontown; her sister, Mary Ann (Eldon) Sten of Painesdale; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

A Mass of Christina Burial for Josephine will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, December 3, 2019, at St. Ignatius Loyola Catholic Church of Houghton, with Fr. John Martignon to officiate.

Spring burial will be in the Forest Hill Cemetery of Houghton.

Friends may call on Monday, December 2, 2019, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Memorial Chapel Funeral Home of Hancock, where a parish prayer service will be held a 4 p.m.
