Fred Lassila

KLINGVILLE — Fred Lassila, 93, a resident of Klingville, passed away Saturday, February 6, 2021, at the Woodland Haven of Canal View – Houghton County Medical Care Facility where he had been a resident patient since this past November.

He was born on July 27, 1927, in Hancock, a son of the late John and Milga (Malineimi) Lassila. Fred was raised in Klingville and was a graduate of the Chassell School with the class of 1945.

Mr. Lassila was a veteran having served in the United States Navy where he helped with the testing for the atomic bomb. Following the service, Fred graduated from Michigan Technological University with an Electrical Engineering Degree. Fred went on to obtain his Professional Electrical Engineering license when he lived in Wisconsin.

On June 23, 1951, he was united in marriage to Lorraine Lakanen. During their 69 years of marriage, the couple had resided in Houghton, in Ohio while Fred worked for General Motors, Wausau, Wisconsin, while he worked for Marathon Electric and Cedarburg, Wisconsin, while he worked for Doerr Electric. In 1986 the couple moved to make their home in Klingville for retirement.

Fred was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church of Chassell and Alfred Erickson Post No. 186 American Legion of Hancock and a life member of the Chassell Historical Society. He enjoyed golfing and was very proud of his hole-in-one. Fred was always active whether it be gardening, making wood, working in the yard, or fishing. He was proud to have won a Caribbean cruise from the Wheel of Fortune television program. He also enjoyed traveling with his wife to Florida and Finland.

Preceding him in death were his grandson Pasha Molitor, his parents, his brothers Arnie, and Robert; his sister Betty Wettberg and a niece.

Surviving are: His wife: Lorraine Lassila of the Bluffs Senior Living Community. His children: James (Nicki) Lassila of Chassell, Michael (Patricia) Lassila of Grafton, Wisconsin, Lori (Ken) Molitor of Sheboygan, Wisconsin. His grandchildren: John Lassila, Jeremy (Stacey) Lassila, Jay Eric (Andrea) Lassila, Alex (Anna) Lassila, Chelsea Lassila, Sam Lassila and Serjey Molitor. His great-grandchildren: Nora and Bryce. His sister: Rose (Harry) Piggott of Charlotte, North Carolina, and other nieces and nephews.

A service for Fred will be held later this year.

Fred’s family would like to thank Dr. Janners and his staff for the care given to him also memorial donations in Fred’s memory are asked to be directed to Holy Trinity Lutheran Church of Chassell.
