Mary C. Kreger

ATLANTIC MINE — Mary C. Kreger, 68, a resident of Atlantic Mine, passed away Friday April 23, 2021, at the UP-Health System – Marquette hospital.

She was born on October 16, 1952, in Hastings, Minnesota, a daughter of the late Harry and Dolores (Westby) Kreger. Mary was raised in the Hastings and Lakeville, Minnesota areas by her father and stepmother Josephine (Freking).

Following High School Mary attended the monastery and was a Franciscan nun for twelve years. During that time, she also attended college and received her degree in social work. Following her call to the church Mary continued her education and received her master’s in social work from the University of Denver. 

Mary then began a very busy and rewarding career in social work. She worked in various parts of the county and on several reservations. She also taught at the University of Montana and spoke at various seminars across the country. She always enjoyed helping people in need but received her most gratification assisting individuals and working in hospice.

Following her career in social work, Mary returned to religion and received her master’s in Divinity from One Spirit Interfaith Seminary.

In 2013, she was united in marriage to Jean Eckerberg and the couple has made their home in Atlantic Mine since that time.

Among Mary’s many interests she was also a gifted poet.

Preceding her in death were her parents Harry and Dolores, her stepmother Josephine (Freking), and her brothers Kevin and Donald.

Surviving are: her spouse: Jean Eckerberg; her brother and sister: Harry Kreger and Maureen Spawr; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
