Howard Weldon Maki

ALSTON — Howard Weldon Maki, age 80, of Alston, was found dead on Sunday, June 20, 2021, in Laird Twp, after being reported missing for several days as a result of dementia.

He was born August 12, 1940, in Alston, Michigan, son of Aake and Impie (Pirhonen) Maki.

Howard graduated from Baraga High School in 1958 and then attended NMU.

He served in the U.S. Army National Guard during the Detroit riots.

In 1964 he purchased Yawkey’s Service in Alston and owned and operated it for 57 years.

He was a founding member of the Laird Twp. Volunteer Fire Department. Howard enjoyed skiing, hunting, antique tractor racing, and treasure hunting for copper.

Surviving are his children, Nyla Middleton (Brad) Nightingale of Plymouth, Minnesota, Wayne Maki of Keystone Heights, Florida, Bryan (Jodie) Maki of Maplewood, Minnesota; sister, Karen Larsen of Shoreview, Minnesota; grandchildren, Peter (Regina) Middleton, Henry Middleton, Joshua Middleton, Abigail Middleton, Caleb Maki, Silas Maki; great grandchildren, Esther and Sylvie Middleton.

A memorial gathering will be held on Friday, July 2, from 4-7 p.m. at the Laird Twp. Fire Department in Alston. Burial will be in the Alston Cemetery.
