Donald E. Mikkola
DOLLAR BAY — Donald E. Mikkola, a resident of Dollar Bay and formerly of Twin Lakes, passed away peacefully on Monday, August 16, 2021.
Don was born in Ishpeming, on July 30, 1938, to Emil and Lillian (Aho) Mikkola. He grew up in Champion, and graduated from Michigan Tech University in 1959 with a bachelor’s degree in metallurgical engineering. He then went on to earn advanced degrees from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois.
On September 3, 1960, Don married Sharon Hyry, in Republic.
Don had a 40-year esteemed career in teaching and research at Michigan Tech in the fields of metallurgy and materials science, earning numerous awards and accolades from colleagues, peers, and professional organizations. During his career, Don was a mentor and guide for many graduate students as he helped them achieve their academic and professional goals.
Don was an avid outdoorsman and loved nature. He studied local history and was actively involved in the historical society of Champion-Beacon-Humboldt which recently published a book detailing the history of this area. He will be remembered for his love of life and how he enjoyed spending time with family and friends.
Don was preceded in death by his parents, and a sister, Susan.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Sharon; daughter, Carolyn (Tom) Roberts; son, John (Ginny) Mikkola; grandchildren Taylor Mikkola, Morgan Mikkola, Sarah Roberts, Carly Roberts, Peyton Roberts, and Cole Roberts; brother, Allen (Donna) Mikkola.
A memorial service for Don will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, September 4, 2021, at Grace Lutheran Church of South Range with Rev. Miach Cavelieri to officiate. Burial will be in the Northland Chapel Garden Cemetery of Ishpeming at a later time.
Friends may call on Saturday, September 4, 2021, from 11 a.m. until time of services at Grace Lutheran Church of South Range.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Don’s name to the Little Brothers-Friends of the Elderly or the Omega House.
