Sharon Dewey
PETOSKEY — Sharon Dewey, 68, after years of fighting cancer, passed away on August 24, 2021 due to COVID-19. She had family at her side when she closed her eyes for the last time in Petoskey.
She was born in Laurium, on December 5, 1952, to Lloyd and Mercedes Satterley, the youngest of five daughters.
Raised in Hubbell, she graduated as salutatorian from Lake Linden Hubbell High School in 1971.
She was a stay-at-home mom while her boys were young, always making sure there was a home baked goodie for them.
When the boys were in school, she took multiple cleaning jobs at Golden Host, Riverside Auto and Premier Real Estate. She worked at Miss Dig 811 for 18 years until illness forced her retirement. She moved to Independence Village in Petoskey in 2019 to be closer to her grandchildren. She participated frequently at trivia, tai chi and enjoyed chatting with friends.
She loved to write personalized poems for family and friends on special occasions and has written hundreds of them during her lifetime. She liked to search for “treasures” at garage sales, go on long walks with friends, play cards with family, do puzzles and play games on her iPad.
Her grandchildren could bring a smile to her face on her worst days, and she loved them as well as the rest of her family, dearly.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her in-laws, Sherman and Romayne Dewey; sisters, Joan Satterley, Barb Donovan and Gloria Dewey, brother-in-law, Larry Dewey, nieces, Melinda Donovan and Ashley Donovan, and nephew, Jeremy Dooley.
She is survived by her son Steve Dewey; son, Dave (Cathy) Dewey and their children Norah and Fletcher; sister, Sandi (Jim) Madajewski; father of her children, Rick Dewey; and many friends, nieces and nephews, especially nephew, Terry Dewey.
In lieu of flowers, please direct donations to Northern Michigan Equine Therapy, 5025 Church Road, Boyne City, MI 49712 or at nmequine.org. A non-profit outpatient rehabilitation facility, Sharon enjoyed meeting the horses, staff and watching her granddaughter during horse-riding lessons.
There will be three outdoor gatherings. Per her wishes, please take COVID-19 precautions so no one else has to suffer through this terrible virus. To limit exposures, there will not be a reception following the scatterings. Masks will be available on site. Locations, 2021 dates and Eastern Time zone times are listed below:
Petoskey: Sunday, September 5, at Greenwood Cemetery Scattering Garden at 1 p.m.
Calumet: Friday October 1, Water Works Park on the shore of Lake Superior at 6 p.m.

A poem from her son Steven. “I hope heaven is a beautiful place, the best of places filled with people we’ve missed and mourned. I hope it’s as vibrant and colorful as is described. I hope she is met with open arms and love…I hope.
