Judith Jarvela

DOLLAR BAY — Judith Jarvela, 92, a resident of Dollar Bay, and formerly of Calumet, passed away peacefully on Monday, October 4, 2021, at the Omega House in Houghton.

She was born on September 10, 1929, in Mohawk to Jacob and Elizabeth (Lampi) Lammi. She attended the local schools and graduated from Calumet High School with the class of 1947.

Judith worked as an office manager for Dr. David Gilbert for many years, retiring in 1989.

On June 4, 1949, she married Carl Jarvela. Together she and Carl loved spending time at the camp in Sedar Bay, playing cribbage together, and loved to go to the area local dances and polka.

Her hands were always busy — knitting, sewing, quilting, or baking. She also taught tatting, and won many awards at the Houghton County Fair for teaching tatting and for several of her handmade creations.

She was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Calumet, and was very active within the church. She served on the church council, sang in the choir, was in the quilting group, and served on the funeral committee.

She is preceded in death by her parents Jacob and Elizabeth Lammi; her brothers William, Wayne, Wesley, and Viktor; her sister Jenny, and her husband, Carl Jarvela, who passed away in 2018.

She is survived by her children: Kay Thomas of Dollar Bay, Roy (Iris) Jarvela of Bumbletown, Ross (Jennifer) Jarvela of Batavia, New York; grandchildren: Shannon, Erin, Laurie, Jeffrey, Alex and Angela; great-grandchildren: Kaylee, Jude, Evan, Remi, Henry, Elena, Carissa, Nyah, Jett, Samuel and Ryder; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

The funeral service will be held at the Erickson Crowley Peterson Funeral Home on Wednesday, October 13, 2021, at 12 p.m. with Pastor Jared Howard to officiate. Friends may call at the Erickson Crowley Peterson Funeral Home in Calumet from 11 a.m. until the time of the service. Burial will take place in the Calvary Cemetery in Ahmeek.
