Sister Patricia Ann Hauser

She was born August 4, 1939, in Shell City, Missouri, to Frank and Agnes Hauser. Her family settled on a farm in Nevada, Missouri, where she was raised.

Sister Pat attended the College of St. Teresa in St. Louis where she earned her BSN and entered the convent of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet.

Following initial hospital work in St. Louis, Sr. Pat was assigned a teaching position in Hancock at St. Joseph’s Hospital School of Nursing. She taught there for three years. She then worked as a head nurse at the hospital for three years. During this time, Sr. Pat worked along side Dr. David Gilbert, M.D. to establish the first ICU at the hospital.

Following the transfer of the hospital, Sr. Pat. stayed briefly in the area as a Community Visiting Sister. She enjoyed listening to the elders of the Copper Country tell their stories of the lives and the history of the area. She listened with  kindness and compassion while always aware and addressing any health issues that arose during her visits. She was always a nurse.

Sister Pat moved on to further her nursing education to become a certified nurse practitioner. Her calling took her to a small rural clinic in Camden, Alabama, where she served the poor and underprivileged with a staff of one aide and one clerk. Many of her patients walked several miles to receive care. She served there 1991-2013.

When her health declined, she returned to St. Louis to reside to the Nazareth Living Center until the time of her death.

Sister Pat cherished memories of the service while living in the Copper Country, where she met and made many lasting friendships as well. She is survived by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet; her sister, Jo Hauser; niece, Rachel; nephews, Brian and Chris.
