Bertin Thomas
CALUMET — Bertin Thomas, 90, a resident of Calumet passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday, November 20, 2021.
He was born on September 29, 1931, in Laurium to Henry and Dorothy (Giles) Thomas. He attended the local schools and graduated from Sacred Heart High School with the class of 1949.
Following high school, Bert enlisted in the United States Army, serving during the Korean War, and was honorably discharged in 1953.
Bert worked as a miner. He worked for Calumet & Hecla Mining Company, Homestake Mining Company, and MTU Experimental Mine. While working at MTU Experimental Mine, he enjoyed teaching the students how to mine.
Bert loved to hunt and fish in his younger years; he also loved spending time at the camp in Eagle River. He also enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He was good friends with Alvin Turnquist, who was his mining partner and dear friend whom he enjoyed recollecting old mining days with.
He loved praying the rosary every evening, and he was a member of Sacred Heart Church in Calumet.
On May 8, 1954, he was united in marriage to Maryann Lanfranki in Sacred Heart Church.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Dorothy Thomas, his wife, Maryann, his brothers Robert and Delbert, his sisters, Elizabeth “Betty Jane” and baby sister, his grandson, Ben Dimmer, and special nephew-in-law Mike “CoCo” Kovachich.
He is survived by his son: James (Marian) Thomas of Hancock; his daughter: Joanne (Charles) Dennis of Allouez; his grandchildren: Christopher (Angela) Dimmer, Taylor, Alli, Rylan, Alexander, Sophia, and Annabelle; his great-grandchildren: Tayler Dimmer, Tori Dimmer, Jacelyn Dimmer, and Bella Dimmer; his great-great-grandson: Karter; brothers: Ronald Thomas of Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin, and Rodney “Butch” Thomas of West Allis, Wisconsin; sisters: Mary Jacques of Laurium, Roberta “Bea” (Harv) Gasperich of Calumet, Rosemarie Wickstrom of Calumet; special nieces and God daughter: Andrea Kovachich of Calumet and Jan (Paul) Jurmu of Laurium; along with numerous other nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A Funeral Mass will be held at Sacred Heart Church on Wednesday, November 24, 2021, at 11 a.m. with Father Gracious Pulimoottil to officiate.
Friends may call at the St. Anthony Hall in Sacred Heart Church on Wednesday, November 24, 2021, from 10 until the time of the Funeral Mass at 11 a.m.
Burial will take place in the spring in Lake View Cemetery.
