Samuel MacBain Oliver
ATLANTA, Mich. — Samuel MacBain Oliver was born February 2, 1942, in Muskegon, the son of William MacBain and Marie (Hallberg) Oliver.
He earned his bachelor’s degree from Western Michigan University and his Divinity degree Chicago Theological Seminary.
Samuel served the South Congegrational Church in Grand Rapids. Later he moved to Houghton where he served Portage Lake United Church.
Prior to his retirement he served the Atlanta Congregational Church in Atlanta, Michigan. Samuel served the Michigan United Church of Christ conference for over 38 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Katherine Oliver, and a sister, Susan Potter.
Samuel is survived by two children, Sarah E. Oliver of Davenport, Iowa, and Stephen Oliver of Des Plaines, Illinois; a grandson, Samuel Oliver Martin; and a sister, Ann Roys of Grand Rapids and his former wife of 28 years, Jill (Aitkin) Pietila.
