Gordon Hubert Yowell Sr.

SWANSBORO — Gordon Hubert Yowell, Sr., 84, passed away at his home on Saturday, February 12, 2022, with his family by his side.

He was born September 5, 1937, in Laurium to the late, Theodore and Sarah Jurmu Yowell.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Sally Jo Tabor.

He is survived by his wife, Anne Kelchner Yowell of the home; children, Gordon Yowell, Jr. of Swansboro, Daniel Yowell of San Diego, Constance Yowell of Boston, and Anthony Yowell of Virginia; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and brother, Theodore Yowell, Jr.

Blessed with a natural gift for all things mechanical, Gordon began his career as a test driver for General Motors in the late 1950s. Gordon would later dedicate his career to the aerospace engineering field, ultimately holding 13 United States patents under his name.

After starting his own company with a drafting board in his living room, he grew his vision into a firm that provided employment for over 50 skilled positions. Gordon finally returned to his beloved Copper Country, retiring in Eagle River in 2011.

A passionate sportsman, Gordo first played basketball and, later in life, tennis and golf. With a short backswing but a powerful drive, he was a staple on Keweenaw golf courses throughout the summer. A lifelong lover of animals, at his request, Gordon will be interned with his Stalwart Scottish terrier companion Hamilton. Hamilton preceded Gordon in 2005, and has been waiting patiently to be reunited with him. Gordon and Hamilton now take their long walks again together, friends forever.

A private family celebration of life will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the National Parkinson’s Foundation.
